The buttonhole flower or “boutonniere” originated in the 15th century as a distinguishing mark of two rival English noble houses. During the French Revolution, noblemen wore a buttonhole flower on their way to the scaffold to show their fearlessness and Oxford students wore them on the occasion of formal examinations.
